Daphne Clarke passed away in a Nursing Home in Fordingbridge on 31 December at the age of 92.
Daphne served at sea with P&O as a Stenographer and her first ship was ‘Maloja’ in 1954. She stayed until the late 1950’s when she left to join Union Castle in their West End office.

Eileen van Lelyveld passed away on 14 December after a long illness. She was 84.
As Eileen Crone, she was a Social Hostess with P&O in the 1960’s before leaving to join Southern Ferries, working on board ‘Eagle’ trading between Southampton and Tangier. It was while on shore leave in Lisbon that she met her husband, Lucas.
In the late 1970’s they moved to Dubai where she became the Social Manager of the Dubai Country Club, and then in 1984/5 moved to the port of Fujairah. They retired to Corfe Castle in Dorset in 1995/96

Michael Penney passed away on the 2nd December at the age of 87.
Michael joined P&O as a Deck Cadet in 1945 and served at sea until 1955 by which time he had risen to 2nd Officer. He then transferred ashore into management and during the period until he left in 1980 was a senior manager in a variety of roles in General Cargo Division, OCL, Container Fleets, P&O Ferries and Bulk Shipping Division. He then set up his own shipping consultancy and spent a period as MD of Geest Line before becoming the UK agent and distributor for a company that marketed solar panels and generators.
He achieved the rank of Captain in the Royal Naval Reserve, and in 1975 was appointed an Aide de Camp to Her Majesty the Queen and awarded the OBE.

David Crowshaw passed away on the 23rd November at the age of 74. He had been ill for some time.
David initially joined P&O in the 1960’s as a Catering Rating, but left after 18 months to join the Army for nine years, where he specialised in bomb disposal. He then re-joined P&O in the early 1970’s and was employed in a number of different positions on board during the following years, including Linenkeeper and Assistant Supervisor. The ships he sailed in included Chusan, Island Princess, Sea Princess, Canberra and Oriana, until he finally left in 1986 when Oriana was withdrawn from service.

Linda Harrison passed away on the 22nd November after losing a long battle with cancer. She was 69.
Linda was one of the identical triplets who became well known as ‘The Karlins’, a cabaret act, which performed initially on board Canberra and Oriana in the 1970’s and later as a duo on board Sun Princess, Island Princess and Pacific Princess.
Her second career was initially with Allders on board P&O Ferries, and then as a Management Consultant, both in UK and overseas.

Fred Luckham passed away on the 6th November. He was aged in his late 80’s.
Fred was a retired Technical Superintendent with P&O/Princess who started his career with the New Zealand Shipping Company.

Commodore John Chester passed away on the 3rd November at the age of 88.
John Chester joined P&O as a Cadet in 1944 after pre-sea training at Warsash, and spent his entire career at sea with P&O, P&O Cruises and Princess Cruises. He retired as Commodore of the Fleet in 1988.

Joe Grubb died suddenly on the 29th October aged 56.
Joe was an Electro-Technical Officer (Electrical) who was with P&O/Princess from 1984 to 1997 when he left the Company to work ashore. His last ship was ‘Victoria’ where he was 1st Electro-Technical Officer.

Tim passed away on Thursday 27 October at the age of 81.
Tim joined the Orient Line as an Assistant Purser in the 1950’s progressing to become a Deputy Purser before transferring to the shore staff. During his subsequent career with the P&O Group he specialised in Personnel and Training and at the time of his retirement he was the Personnel Manager of Three Quays, which included Peninsular Electronics, Broadgate Limited and Marine Safety Services.

Isabel Stadden passed away on Thursday 20 October after a long illness. She was 78.
As Isabel Menzies she was a Nursing Sister with P&O in the 1960’s. Her husband Michael (Mike) Stadden was an Assistant Purser with P&O and later a Purser with P&O North Sea Ferries.

Commodore Chief Engineer Officer David H Smith passed away on Thursday 15 September, aged 93.
David (known to his Engineer colleagues as ‘DH’) first went to sea with Royal Mail Lines in the early years of World War II before joining P&O in September 1944. During the years which followed he worked his way up to Chief Engineer Officer and finally to Commodore Chief Engineer Officer of P&O Cruises. He retired in December 1982 having spent the last several years of his service in Canberra.

Ian Coull passed away in Sydney on Tuesday 9th August at the age of 84.
Ian joined P&O from Clan Line in 1954 as 4th Officer and stayed until 1967 by which time he had risen to be Chief Officer. He then emigrated to Australia where he was with OCL/P&OCL for many years before taking up a senior management position with Swire Group subsidiary, Frigmobile.

Diana Evans passed away on 30 July at the age of 74.
As Diana Hogan, she was a Nursing Sister with P&O from 1969 until some time in the early 1970’s mainly in Oriana.

Hugh Slavin passed away on Sunday 24th July at the age of 76.
Hugh joined P&O as a Musician/Drummer in the 1960’s and sailed in Himalaya and Chusan. In 1968 he transferred ashore to the Entertainments Department, eventually becoming Head of Entertainments. He left in 1984 having chosen not to relocate when the department moved from London to Southampton.
Although he passed away in London, he had lived in Gibraltar since 1992 except for two years in the late 1990’s.

Brian Love passed away on 30 June at the age of 82.
Brian was an Engineer Officer who went to sea in 1954 with Shaw Savill and Furness Withy before joining P&O in 1959. He served in a number of cargo ships as well as the passenger ships Corfu, Himalaya, Canberra and Oriana. He left P&O in October 1978 by which time he was Senior Second Engineer Officer. He was married to Dorothy Munt, who was a former Social Hostess he met when they were both in Himalaya.

“Commander John Woollen RNR (Retd) died last Wednesday, the 22nd June 2016, aged 83, after a long illness borne with great courage and dignity. At the age of 14 he joined HMS WORCESTER, where he became Chief Cadet Captain, although he was a year younger than most of his intake. At 16 he joined P&O as a cadet, his first ship being SOCOTRA, at the same time as being accepted for the Royal Naval Reserve. He served with P&O for about 20 years, mostly but not entirely in passenger liners including all the STRATHs as well as HIMALAYA and CHUSAN. Royal Naval ships included the aircraft carrier HMS ILLUSTRIOUS for 6 months and the destroyer HMS CARRON. Upon leaving the sea, he joined Trinity House as a Pilot in the eastern Channel, Dover Straits and round into the Thames Estuary. When his mother died, he left Trinity House and ran the family property business until his death. He lived in Saltwood with his wife Margaret (nee Price) a former Nursing Sister in P&O, who died in 2002. They had four daughters. In later years his partner was Carola Ingall, a former Assistant Purser with P&O.

"It is with great sadness that I am writing to inform you of the death of John Murphy, Bars Manager on board Oriana.
John had been on leave before becoming seriously ill and sadly passed away on Monday 30 May.
John started with the company as a Bartender in 2001 progressing through the ranks to become a Bars Manager, serving on ships across the P&O Fleet for 14 years, John was a well known, highly liked member of the team and will be sorely missed by his friends and colleagues.
Our thoughts and condolences go out to his parents, sister, friends and all of his colleagues at this sad time. As a mark of respect, the Carnival House flags will be lowered today.

John ‘Dusty’ Miller passed away peacefully on Thursday, 19 May, aged 87.
Dusty was at sea with P&O throughout the 1950’s and early 1960’s as an Assistant Purser and Deputy Purser. In the mid 1960’s, as a result of ill health, he transferred to the shore staff. He was initially in the P&O West End Office, but later he moved to the Fleet Personnel Department, joining there as the Welfare and Travel Officer before becoming the Senior Fleet Personnel Officer responsible for the appointment of all Pursers and Entertainment Officers. He retired in 1986.

Captain Chris Upjohn – died in Western Australia on 10 May 2016 aged 77
Chris joined P&O as a Cadet in the late 1950’s and left in the early 1970’s when he was a Chief Officer. He then joined the offshore supply industry as a Master before becoming a Rigmaster based in Aberdeen.

Calvin Lodge – died 8 February 2016 aged in his late 40’s
Calvin was with P&O/Princess from 1991 to 1997 as an Assistant Purser and was a Senior Assistant Purser (Catering) when he left to join Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL), where he rose to become their youngest ever Hotel Manager (Purser).

Gifford Hodgeman – died in Sydney on 1 February 2016 aged 89
Gifford joined the P&O West End Office in the early 1950’s. After a few years he transferred to sea staff as an Assistant Purser and eventually became a Deputy Purser. He left in the mid 1970’s to start a new life in Australia.
